The credits are often the first thing we see when we watch a great film or TV show, but the complexity and artistry of title design is rarely discussed. Creators of title sequences are tasked to invent concepts that evoke the core story and themes of the production, and to create a powerful visual experience that pulls the viewer into the film’s world. In this episode we hear the stories of some of the most inventive people working in the field, including the creators of the iconic Mad Men sequence, the hilarious Zombieland opening and “rules” sequences, and the stirring end credits from Blue Valentine.

Following his #1 smash hit ‘Louder’ - one of 2011’s biggest-selling singles - DJ Fresh is back with his new single ‘Hot Right Now’, featuring the vocal talents of Rita Ora. This is the official video, shot in Los Angeles and directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat
The 20-year-old singer-songwriter is being hailed as the jewel in the Roc Nation crown and was signed by Jay Z after one phone call. Rita’s vocals give ‘Hot Right Now’ a distinctive twist and the track bristles with the kind of energy and signature beats that Fresh has become known for.
Now a household name and armed with the accolade of having the first dubstep/drum & bass track to top the national singles chart with ‘Louder’, DJ Fresh has recently raised the bar once again via a sold-out UK live tour featuring a full band (including a headline performance at Alexandra Palace in front of 6,000 people), his Future Jungle EP, remixes for Katy B, Hervé and Jessie J and winning ‘Best Dance Act’ at this year’s Urban Music Awards - and his new album is already one of the most anticipated albums of 2012.

SXSW was a music festival first, so there’s lots of love for the music video format. In addition to the music video screening, this year featured a Have Your Music Videos Critiqued by Andrew WK panel and screenings of the feature-length Girl Walk // All Day Girl Talk music video.
SXSW’s selected music videos featured a mix of techniques and ideas, from men who cry to disco ball-head ballerinas to doing a guitar (that last one is NSFW). Many of the directors were on hand to answer questions after the screening. Most delightful were the anecdotes, like the twenty-four straight hours (and fainting session) required to create Gotye “Somebody That I Used To Know” or the run and gun antics of CHRISTEENE “African Mayonnaise” (“It usually takes security at least three minutes to show up, and the song is three minutes long, so we were able to get what we needed”).
I may sound like a broken record, but I can’t emphasize enough how different it is watching these videos in a theater with a giant screen, powerful sound system, and no distracting laptop or browser windows around. For example, Matt Devine’s Son of Kick “Playing the Villain” was a perfect way to close out the screening. You’re stuck in the dark, a bit exhausted after watching twenty-one videos back to back. The music is LOUD, you have no idea how much time is left in the video, and you’re watching these trapped kids crumble apart with no idea how far it will go. It was brilliant.
The SXSW Best Music Video award went to DANIELS for their escalator ride gone horribly wrong in Battles “My Machine”. The dynamic duo were also in the running for an MTVu Woodie, whose awards ceremony is held in Austin during SXSW. Natasha Pincus’s video for Gotye “Somebody That I Used To Know” was also doubly recognized. Other nominees included Keith Schofield’s Duck Sauce “Big Bad Wolf”, Fleur & Manu’s M83 “Midnight City”, and Kyle Frere’s Major Lazer “Original Don”. The eventual Woodie Winner (and cock blocker of a DANIELS double header) was none other than Drew Barrymore for her celebrity-tastic Warriors-inspired music video for Best Coast “Our Deal”.
Check out all the SXSW Music Videos below. A couple of them are NSFW, and have been marked as such.

THE SIRENS OF TITAN
(by Dani Wolf)
Title sequence for a film based on the Kurt Vonnegut novel. Made with Tal Moskovich.
Our goal was to create a visual interpretation of a phenomenon in space known as chrono-synclastic infundibulum, which is defined by Vonnegut as “those places … where all the different kinds of
truth fit together.”
